Maybe more information will come out of the wood work. Here is an update on the Vulcan Iron Works loco Oregon Pony. The more you look the muddier it gets. 1 0-4-0G 9X18 34” 8 tons 5’ May 1861 $4000 Oregon Steam Navigation Co. “OREGON PONY” (first ran May 10, 1862) David Hewes (Steam Paddy Co.) San Francisco, CA 1867 ?Duncan Bros. Lbr. Co. (Duncan”s Mills Land & Lbr. Co.) “Mrs. Duncan’s Teakettle” Duncan’s Mills, CA 1876-1885? David Hewes San Francisco, CA 1879 or later State of Oregon 1905 (donated by Hewes) 4’ 8½“ gauge (stored at UP Albina shops) Portland, OR Union Station (display) 1926 Cascade Locks, OR Museum (display) 1970 NOTE-1 Duncan’s railroad was built 1n 1876 to 5’ 5” gauge and converted to 36” in about 1885. There are miner discrepancies between the Duncan Brothers engine and the Oregon Pony such as the Pony has nine spoke wheels and the Teakettle has eight spokes. However, since the only know photographs of the Pony were taken after its restoration and donation to the state of Oregon in 1905 these could well be the same machine.
