The Dewey Brothers (Charles, George, and Earnest) of Goldsboro, North Carolina began building and repairing sawmill and other machinery in 1884. About 1898, they started building industrial type locomotives with oscillating cylinders. Later they began building chain and sprocket gear drive locomotives similar to the 1882 design created by W. E. Cole of Montgomery, Alabama. Production ended in the late 1920's. 200d Dewey locomotives were used in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Virginia. Records show that at least 43 geared drive locomotives were built. The remainder of this page will focus only on the geared locomotives.
Two standard models or types were built. The smaller of the two had a common cylinder size of 6"x9" and the larger model, a size of 8"x12". Within the larger type, a variation was offered by the addition of a trailing truck and an additional water tank. For the purposes of discussion, we will refer to the types by their common cylinder size - 6x9 & 8x12.
