Saint John & Ophir Railroad #1 - s/n 1159

An interesting addition likely made to the locomotive subsequent to its manufacture was the extension of rear cab roof to completely overhang  the fuel bunker.  This is seen in the middle photo.

The railroad owned two class "C" Climaxes, with the second being s/n 1189 Although the source text accompanying the middle photo notes the locomotive is SJORR #1, there is one notable difference this particular locomotive has when compared to the same features on locomotive in the top and bottom photos.  Both hand rails on either side of the cab entrance on the middle locomotive are significantly longer than the same on the other two photos.  Could the locomotive in this middle photo actually be s/n 1189?

The locomotive was originally built with an unknown shop number for a previous owner.  Climax rebuilt the locomotive after a wreck and was assigned the s/n 1271 at that time.

Great Northern Paper Co., operated in northwestern Maine.  The current generally accepted Climax owner records have the railroad name incorrectly spelled "Seeboomook Lake...." with a superfluous "e"

 Purchased by the Potate Timber Co., Matapuna NZ and shipped unassembled to New Zealand.  Assembled in the NZ Railways Petone workshops.   Later sold to Pukuwea Sawmills Ltd of Mananui, NZ where it continued to work after subsequent resale to Ellis & Burnard.  During the 1940's it was transferred to work in Mangapahei before its final commercial use as a yard shunter in Ongarue in 1962.    It was purchased for preservation in the mid 1960's and moved south to the current Shantytown site in Westland by 1969.  It began operation at Shantytown in January of 1980 where it continues its duties today.

 It was the company's 1st Climax to use the #1 road number.  Their 2nd was s/n 1642.
This "tee" boilered engine used double flanged drivers  to navigate the company's "pole road" railroad.  The "rail" was actually de-limbed tree logs ("poles") laid end to end for track.

The company was a lumber company with its home office and one of it's mills located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  It had timber lands in Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky, with an additional mill in Knoxville, Tennessee.  The location of this image depicts is unknown.  It was dated 1910.
