As evidenced by a small portion of the visible face of the rear driver on the left rear locomotive truck (see arrow indicating location in the related photo), the locomotive ran on wooden rail and utilized "corrugated (cleated) wheel tread" on the drivers.   Click the image entitled "Cleated" in the  "Drivers - Tires and Flanges" section of the "Climax Components 1" page on this site.  These special drivers enhanced traction.
